Moving away from the raw, blistering speed of their landmark album Darkness Descends, Dark Angel embraced a heavy technical thrash metal approach on this record. Gene Hoglan's lyrics shifted toward mature, deeply unsettling psychological territory. The songs deal with severe real-world traumas, including child abuse, sexual assault, and psychological degradation.
This was the band's final studio album for over three decades, preceding their long-awaited 2025 comeback album, Extinction Level Event.
