Zola Jesus (Nika Roza Danilova) returns with a more primitive, almost shamanic approach to her art. After a period of intense creative and personal crisis, this album functioned as an act of surrender to the unknown and instinct, with the help of producer Randall Dunn (known for his work with Sunn O))) and Earth). The record moves away from the “clean” synth-pop sound of her past and dives into a blend of darkwave, industrial, and avant-garde elements. The use of live instruments and percussion (with Matt Chamberlain on drums) gives the compositions a physical, earthy dimension absent from her earlier work. Danilova’s voice remains the central, mesmerizing instrument: an operatic force that alternates between mourning and explosive release over ominous synths and tribal rhythms.
